Our story

At Tempo, we’re creating a fairer society by valuing everyone’s contribution

Founded in communities, we’re growing a national network of people and organisations using Tempo Time Credits to ensure everyone is valued and their contribution matters.

Tempo Time Credits are a time-based currency that say ‘thank you’ to people who help out or volunteer in their communities. Once earned, Tempo Time Credits can be spent on a range of exciting activities with our growing network of partners.

Our mission can be traced back to our community foundations in the South Wales Valleys. Our founder Becky Booth created Tempo Time Credits (then known as Spice) in 2008, to explore how a time-based currency could bring together fractured ex-mining communities and increase the number of people giving time to their communities. What started as an experiment is now becoming a movement.

Since 2008, Tempo has partnered with over 1,800 public services, organisations, businesses, and charities across England and Wales. Together, our members have earned over 1 million Tempo Time Credits. We are on our way to becoming a national charity - with a target of 2.5 million Time Credits being earned and spent by 2023. We are now a team of almost fifty people working from our offices in Cardiff and London, plus remote workers based across various regions.
